What is a sneaker bot? A plain-English explainer

By the Cartrix Team · 2026-06-03

A sneaker bot — more accurately a drop bot or checkout bot — is software that automates online checkout for limited-release products. It watches for stock to go live, adds the right item to cart, and completes payment and shipping faster and at greater scale than manual checkout, to improve the chance of securing inventory before it sells out. Despite the name, these tools are used for far more than sneakers: trading cards, graphics cards, consoles, and other limited drops.

Why do drop bots exist?

Limited releases create a structural mismatch: thousands of buyers compete for a few hundred units that sell out in seconds. The deciding factor is rarely intent — it’s the seconds it takes to find the product, add it to cart, fill out checkout, and clear anti-bot challenges. Automation compresses those seconds and lets one operator make many attempts at once, which is why drops became effectively un-winnable by hand for the most hyped items.

How a sneaker bot works

Every drop bot performs the same core jobs:

  • Monitoring — detecting the moment a product becomes available and signalling it instantly.
  • Tasks & concurrency — running many checkout attempts in parallel so at least one is likely to complete.
  • Profiles & proxies — submitting saved shipping/payment details across multiple IP addresses to avoid per-IP limits.
  • Anti-bot handling — detecting and clearing queues and CAPTCHA challenges without breaking the session.

For a deeper walkthrough of each stage, see our checkout automation guide, and the role of IPs in our proxies guide.

Are sneaker bots legal?

Running checkout-automation software is generally legal, but it can breach an individual retailer’s terms of service, and some jurisdictions specifically regulate automated purchasing of event tickets. The responsible approach is to review the terms of any site you use a tool on. Where Cartrix fits

Cartrix splits the problem into two products: Cartrix Alerts handles monitoring (Discord + SMS pings the moment a tracked product drops), and Cartrix Pro handles the automated checkout across supported sites. Start with Alerts to catch drops, step up to Pro to win them.

Never miss a Pokémon restock again.

Cartrix Alerts pings you on Discord + SMS the second a set restocks; Cartrix Pro secures it at MSRP with one-tap checkout. No proxies, from $5.99/mo.
